2016 Abandoned Bicycle Muscat
The 2020 Abandoned Bicycle is either the end of a long story or the beginning of a short one. If you’ve ever walked around New York City I’m sure you’ve seen them: bicycles chained to street signs, bike racks, chain link fences, abandoned one or two or three winters ago, gears and chain rusting into a solid chunk of oxides, paint flaking, seat stolen long ago. Bro, you know what I’m talking about! Hand-picked and foot-tread before going to press, this Muscat was fermented in neutral barrique and aged for 12 months. It was bottled unfined and unfiltered on October 17, 2017, and rested in bottle in our cellar for five years, undisturbed, until 2022. Bring it to a blind tasting party and stooge ‘em all! It’s aromatic, but not aggressively Muscat-ty; acid-driven and saline, it’s a banger that’s only just coming into its drinking window and is a threat to blow the doors off of white wines half its age.
Grown on the Rorick estate vineyard in Calaveras County, on soils comprised of a layer of schist over dolomite-rich limestone. Elevation of the vineyard is 2000’. The combination of limestone, elevation, and the cold nights of the Sierras produce fruit with depth, texture, and brilliant natural acidity; minimal handling in the winery allows for an honest and pure expression of site and variety to shine through.
